Monte is a 600 to 800 m above sea level. M. located place with the church Nossa Senhora do Monte above the island capital Funchal on the Portuguese island Madeira . Monte has 6701 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

From 1893 to 1943, the Caminho de Ferro do Monte cog railway took over the transport of guests from Funchal to Monte and on to Terreiro da Luta at an altitude of 867 m. However, this was discontinued due to several accidents. It only reminds the building of the terminus.
Today two cable cars go to Monte. One connects Funchal with Monte , the second cable car leads to the botanical garden , the Jardim Botânico da Madeira .

Due to the steep terrain can be seen on the way back with a basket sled, the Carro de cesto mentioned runner sled , the paved road Caminho do Monte slide down as far as the upper outskirts of Funchal. The original four-kilometer route has been shortened to two kilometers, the rest can be covered on foot or by taxi. The basket sledges, which have no steering or brakes, are controlled by two sled drivers dressed in traditional white costume and braked by holding back or standing sideways.
Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Monte
The pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was built from 1741. In the high altar of the church there is a venerated image of the Holy Virgin. On August 15th of each year there is a great procession in honor of the Virgin.
The coffin of the last Emperor of Austria, Charles I , is laid out in the left aisle of the church . After the First World War he was exiled to Madeira, where he lived with his family in the manor Quinta Gordon above the church until his death in 1922 . The mansion was destroyed in a forest fire in 2016 after being restored a few years earlier.
In the vicinity of the church there is the excursion restaurant Café Do Parque in a luxury hotel from the turn of the century.
Tropical garden
Near the church is one of Madeira's most beautiful gardens, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden ( Jardim Tropical Monte Palace ). In it you can admire a multitude of tropical and subtropical plants on winding promenades in addition to the native flora. Japanese and oriental gardens as well as ponds and fountains are complemented by sculptures and azulejos (brightly painted ceramic tiles).
