The Monte Darwin (also Cerro Darwin , both in German Darwin mountain ) is the highest mountain in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and is located in the Chilean part of the main island . To the north of the Beagle Channel is Monte Darwin in the Cordillera Darwin , the southernmost of the larger elevations in the Andes . The mountain consists of crystalline mica slate and is covered by ice fields, especially on its southern slopes.
The first ascent took place in 1961 by Eric Shipton, E. Garcia, F. Vivanco and C. Marangunic. The best time for ascents is between December and March.
The mountain got its name during the second voyage of the HMS Beagle by Captain Robert FitzRoy on February 12, 1834, the 25th birthday of Charles Darwin .
