Monteiro Lobato

José Bento Monteiro Lobato (born April 18, 1882 in Taubaté , † July 4, 1948 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian writer and publisher.

Monteiro Lobato first worked as a lawyer and coffee planter in the state of São Paulo . He published sketches and short stories . The figure of the Jeca Tatu in it is considered typical of the inhabitants of the Brazilian hinterland.

Monteiro Lobato was a publisher in São Paulo and founded the literary magazine Revista do Brasil . He promoted young authors and is considered a forerunner of Modernismo in Brazilian literature . He is also known for his children's books, especially his Sítio do Picapau Amarelo .
