Montemorelos is a Mexican city ​​with around 50,000 inhabitants and the capital of the municipality of the same name ( municipio ) with a total of around 70,000 inhabitants.

Location and climate

The town of Montemorelos is located approx. 82 km (driving distance) southeast of Monterrey in the valley of the Río Pilón on the east side of the Sierra Madre Oriental at an altitude of approx. 420  m ; the Gulf of Mexico is approx. 150 km (as the crow flies) away. The climate is temperate to warm and sometimes even humid; Rain (approx. 860 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the summer half-year.

The steady increase in population is mainly due to the immigration of families from the surrounding villages. The population consists mainly of Indians and Mestizos ; however, mostly Spanish is spoken.

The first orange juice production machine in Latin America was built in Montemorelos because the mild climate and fertile soil make it a suitable place to grow citrus fruits of all kinds. That is why Montemorelos is also called Capital naranjera . There is also a large fruit processing factory. The US food company Mars also has a small factory in Montemorelos.

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards around the middle of the 16th century, the region was mainly inhabited by nomadic Indians. The Spaniards founded the first haciendas and forced the Indians to settle down and work on their land. The founding date of the place Villa de San Mateo del Pilón is the year 1637, when the governor Martín de Zavala transferred land in the Valle del Pilón to Captain Alonso De León , but it was not until 1665 that the first stone church was built, which began in 1817 was gradually replaced by the current building. In 1825, the place received - after its renaming in honor of the independence fighter (insurgente) José María Morelos - the city rights (ciudad) .
