features

The species is very similar to the Pyrenean mountain newt. Compared to Calotriton asper, Calotriton arnoldi has fewer and smaller, more pointed tubercles on the back and no tubercles on the belly or the underside of the tail . The animals reach a total length of about 10 centimeters. The top of the body is usually dark in one color. The yellow stripe on the back of Calotriton asper is absent. In some animals, yellow spots can be present on the body flanks and sides of the tail. The cloacal region of the females is elongated and directed backwards. It is narrower at the base than that of Calotriton asper . Because of this, it looks conical in Calotriton asper , but cylindrical in Calotriton arnoldi .
