Moosachat (also mocha stone is called) a gemstone formed from silicon dioxide is. It is a type of chalcedony that contains minerals of green color in the stone, formed into filaments and other structures of moss . This look is sometimes reminiscent of blue cheese. The remainder of the area is clear or milky white quartz , and the stone's minerals are mainly oxides of manganese or iron . It is not a true form of agate as moss agate is usually lacking in banding. Moss agate is the white shape with green inclusions, reminiscent of the moss found on many parts of the stone. These colors are caused by amounts of metals such as chromium or iron, which cause contamination of the moss agate. These metals can appear in different colors, depending on their valency.

Despite its name and appearance, moss agate does not contain any organic matter, but rather is usually formed from weathered volcanic rocks.

The Montana moss agate is another type of agate found in deposits of the Yellowstone River and its tributaries between Sidney and Billings, Montana . The agate was originally formed in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park as a result of volcanic activity. In Montana Moss Agate, the red color is the result of iron oxide and the black color is the result of manganese oxide.
