Moses Görgün , (secular name Hasyo Mushe Görgün , formerly Mor Severius Moses ; born June 5, 1981 in Füssen ) has been Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Germany of the so-called Genuin Orthodox Church of Greece since 2016 . Before that he was the first Metropolitan of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Europe .

Life

Syrian Orthodox Church

Archbishop Moses attended the school of the St. Jakob von Sarug Monastery in Warburg, Westphalia , from 1998 to 2000 , where he studied Syrian theology . In 2000 he entered the monastery of St. Ephraem the Syrians in Glanerbrug, the Netherlands, and was dressed as a monk there . In 2001 he was ordained a priest there at the age of 21 . From 2000 to 2004 he was youth pastor for six parishes in the Netherlands and was the first Syrian Orthodox priest to work specifically in pastoral care. After this activity he was installed as a parish priest in Sweden from 2005 to 2006. In 2006 he completed a postgraduate course at the Maria Einsiedeln Abbey .

Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church

Metropolitan and Archbishop Moses of the Genuin Orthodox Church

In 2006 he broke away from the Patriarchate of Damascus and submitted to the jurisdiction of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church with the two monks Isa Oygur and Johannes Budak with the aim of establishing pastoral care in Europe. In 2007 the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church founded its own Archdiocese of Europe ; Archbishop Moses was consecrated on November 21, 2007 for the Archdiocese of Europe with the surname Mor Severius and the church was granted autonomous status.

In February 2009, the Indian General Synod elevated the autonomous archdiocese to the status of a quasi- autocephalous Antiochene Syrian Orthodox Church ( Syrian Orthodox Church of Europe ). Archbishop Moses had since been Metropolitan of Germany and Primate of the Church. In 2012 he founded the St. Gabriel Monastery in Altenbergen in Thuringia and headed the European headquarters from there.

First excommunication

The current Archbishop Moses was excommunicated by the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch on December 5, 2007 because he became a metropolitan in an ecclesiastical group excommunicated by the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch . From the point of view of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, his episcopal ordination is therefore invalid.

Second excommunication

On March 16, 2009, the Synod of the Indian Orthodox Church elevated the archdiocese to autocephaly status, and it was renamed the Syrian Orthodox Church of Europe . Mor Severius Moses Görgün was appointed Primate and Metropolitan of the Church. In May the Indian Orthodox Church confirmed that the new church's authority was limited to Europe and that it had no authority over the church in India. Nevertheless, Mor Severius Moses Görgün consecrated Mor Bartholomaos Joseph as Metropolitan of Angamaly , a diocese within the jurisdiction of the Indian Orthodox Church, on March 21, 2010 .

As a result of this violation, Baselios excommunicated Marthoma Didymos I. Mor Severius Moses Görgün and withdrew his recognition from the church. This resulted in the church changing its name to reflect its presence outside of Europe; since April 28, 2010 it was called the Antiochene Syrian Orthodox Church . Mor Severius Moses Görgün continued to ignore the wishes of the Indian Orthodox Church and consecrated Mar Timotheos Yuhanon as Bishop of Idukki and Mar Gregorios Mathews as Bishop of Kottayam , both dioceses in India (see Antiochene Syrian Orthodox Church ).

Genuin Orthodox Church of Greece

In 2016 he moved to the Genuin Orthodox Church of Greece (Church of the True Christians of Greece (Kallinikos Synod)) and became Archbishop of the newly created Archdiocese of Myreon in Germany. Its seat remained the monastery in Altenbergen.
