The first aerial photos of him were taken during an overflight during the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948). The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out surveys between 1948 and 1950. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him after Commander Clifford D.
