The O'pen BIC , often referred to as the Open BIC and since 2019 O'pen Skiff , is a one-handed dinghy designed by Daniele Vitali for young sailors. In contrast to the popular Opti . the O'pen BIC is not a closed dinghy, but a sporty skiff for young sailors. Boat was launched in 2006 and has been sailed in international competitions since 2008. In Germany the O'pen BIC is one of 12 official youth championship classes of the DSV and has been sailing official German championships since 2013. Today up to 250 boats take part in world and continental championships.

In terms of sailing, the boat can hardly be compared with the established children's classes. O'pen BIC sailing sees itself as fast skiff sailing with a high "water content". The O'pen BIC is the ideal entry-level class for sporty sailors who later aim for 29er, 49er or foiling classes.

In 2019 the boat was renamed O'pen Skiff as a result of the sale of the manufacturing company BIC-Sports to Tahe Outdoors.

The boat

The fuselage of the O'pen BIC is made from two polyethylene sheets using the twin sheet process. This industrial process provides a very robust hull with a favorable price-performance ratio . In contrast to a classic GRP hull, an O'pen BIC is almost "indestructible". Due to its size and weight, the O'pen BIC can be easily transported on the car roof. The mast is divisible and is inserted into the mast pocket of the sail when rigging . The O'pen BIC is unloaded and set up ready to sail in five minutes. With a few but efficient trim devices, the boat is set up in no time.

The O'pen BIC can be driven with 2 sails. For training and for lighter sailors there is a 3.8 m² Dacron sail, but in the competition the 4.5 m² foil sail is preferred. Both sails are fully battened and bring high speed. The O'pen BIC is significantly more agile and faster than an optimist and more comparable to the Europe or the laser.

The ideal weight of the sailor is 40 to 60 kg, whereby the overturned boat can be straightened with a body weight of 30 kg. Lighter sailors can master the boat ideally with the smaller sail. Thanks to the open design of the tail is omitted after a capsize the the optimists "bailers" the boat dreaded exploitation.

regatta

The O'pen BIC has been a recognized international class of World Sailing (formerly ISAF) since 2009 and an official youth class in the German Sailing Association since 2013 . The O'pen BIC is a worldwide standardized unit class. All boats and materials starting in a regatta are therefore almost identical and fully competitive for a long time and without high investments.

Around 100 active participants in Germany each year take part in the O'pen BIC Tour, a regatta series with almost 30 events. The O'pen BIC has been an officially recognized youth class in the German Sailing Association since 2013 and holds its own championships or takes part in the large youth championships of the DSV. In 2014, during the Travemuender Week, the O'pen-BIC Sailing World Championship was held with 130 participants from twelve nations. In 2016 for the anniversary World Cup in Quiberon, a good 250 sailors took part.

In Germany the O'pen BIC sailors are represented by the Deutsche O'pen SKIFF Class eV, internationally by the OBCA.
