Travemuender week
The Travemuender Week is a series of sailing regattas . The international regatta is organized by the Lübeck Yacht Club together with the North German Regatta Club and the Hamburg Sailing Club as well as the City of Lübeck every year on the Lübeck Bay in front of Travemünde . It usually takes place at the end of July and is the second largest regatta series in the world after the Kiel Week .
history
The Travemünde Week came into being in 1889 when the Hamburg merchants Hermann Wentzel and Hermann Dröge competed in front of Travemünde. The winner received a bottle of Lübeck Rotspon . The regattas at the Travemünde race were once brought to life by Hermann Fehlings , at the time chairman of the Lübeck Yacht Club. In 1899 it marked the end of the Kiel Week . Since 1898 the regatta series has been organized under the leadership of the LYC - only interrupted by the two world wars.
There are no records for the Travemuender Week for the years 1914 to 1919. It has therefore failed. The first event after the First World War took place in 1920 . The regatta series was also canceled in 1933 and 1934. In 1940 and 1941 there were Travemünde war regattas, but the schedule of events was similar to the Travemünde weeks. In 1942 and 1943 the events were held over a weekend. The next Travemuende Week was not held until 1948 and since then the annual cycle has been adhered to.
The Rotspon Cup has been held again since 2004. The mayor of Lübeck competes against mayors of other cities. Bernd Saxe lost to Ole von Beust and Professor Peter Dominiak from Lübeck in 2008, 2009 and 2010 . In 2011, Bernd Saxe's crew won against Torsten Albigs , who sailed for the first time. 2,600 active sailors from 37 nations celebrated the 117th Travemuende Week in 2006, with around 350 races in 32 boat classes.
The 122nd Travemuende Week took place from July 22nd to 31st, 2011 and was held at the same time as a European or World Championship for some boat classes. In 2014 the 125th Travemuende Week took place from July 18 to 27, 2014.
