Trapeze dinghy Contender at the 1998 World Cup

The Contender is a one-handed - trapeze dinghy . The Contender was designed by Ben Lexcen in 1967 as a potential Olympic dinghy . In 1968 the Contender got international status and is sailed in more than 12 countries in class. Although the Contender 1965-1968 had won the selection regattas to succeed the Finn dinghy as an Olympic dinghy, the class was denied Olympic status. The nomination of the laser as the second Olympic single-handed class for men alongside the Finn dinghy in 1992 can be seen as a final failure .

More than 2500 Contenders had been built by 2011.

The Contender can be sailed by sailors of all sizes and weights. The weight of successful sailors is between about 55 kg and over 105 kg with a height of about 165 cm to 200 cm. The age of the sailors is between 16 and 60 years.

The Contender can be sailed on inland areas such as quarry ponds as well as on the open sea.

Championships

World championships are held every year in the international contender class. As a rule, a World Cup takes place in Europe every two years; the associations in North America and Australia agree on the other years.

European championships are held every two years with such a rhythm that a major international championship is held in Europe every year.

The record world champion is Andrea Bonezzi from Italy with seven titles. England has 13 world titles, Australia has eleven world championships. Italy has eight wins, New Zealand five, Germany three, Denmark two and the USA one. So far the British have eight different contender world champions, Australia five, Germany three, Italy, Denmark and New Zealand two each, and the USA one.

Medemblik on the IJsselmeer is the most popular venue with five world championships, followed by Brisbane and Hayling Island with three world championships each. The 1983 World Cup was to be held in South Africa ; the venues Durban and Pietermaritzburg were considered ; For political reasons, however, a World Cup in South Africa did not take place.
