Mordechai Hod

Mordechai "Motti" Hod (born September 28, 1926 in Kibbutz Degania ; † June 29, 2003 ) was an Israeli major general and aviation entrepreneur. From 1966 to 1973 he was chief of the Israeli Air Force and from 1977 to 1979 chairman of the board of the airline El Al .

Life

Hod was born in the British Mandate for Palestine and studied agricultural science. In 1944 he joined the British Army's Jewish Brigade as a driver and served in the Allied campaign in Italy . After the end of World War II , he became a member of the Hagana , an underground Jewish paramilitary organization. Because of his involvement with Alija Bet , he was temporarily imprisoned by the British. He then successfully completed a pilot training course in Czechoslovakia , and at the end of 1948, together with other pilots, transferred Avia S-199 and Spitfire fighter aircraft to Israel, where they were used in the newly established Israeli Air Force. Hod then learned to fly new types of jet jets in Great Britain and participated as a pilot in numerous missions, including a. in the Suez Crisis . From 1960 he became operations manager in the air force staff.

In April 1966, Hod took over the leadership of the IAF . He also waged them during the Six Day War in June 1967, in which his air force units succeeded in destroying large parts of the Egyptian air force on the ground. The war eventually ended in Israel's victory. During the war of attrition its air force destroyed large parts of the northern canal sector on the Sinai Peninsula . He ended his military career in May 1973 and was succeeded in his office by Benjamin Peled .

In 1975, Hod founded the cargo aircraft company CAL Cargo Airlines and in 1977 moved to the El Al aviation group as president . In 1995 he earned a PhD in Business Management from Pacific Western University in Los Angeles . Most recently, he worked at Israel Aerospace Industries .

Mordechai Hod died on June 29, 2003. He was married to his wife, Penina Hod, who also served in the IAF , and had three children.
