Hammerwhore is an American thrash metal band from Alice , Texas , which was founded in 2001, disbanded in 2007 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was formed in November 2001 by guitarist and singer Joe Gonzalez while he was writing songs for his then band Sempiternal. However, since he quickly realized that the material was not suitable for this band, he began to record the songs with a drum computer and to think about a band name for his new project. He decided against the names "Razer" and "Turbatis" and for "Hammerwhore". He first wrote the song Slave to Hell , which was followed by Loyal to War and Heavy Metal Destroyers . The Sempiternal guitarist Andy Gonzalez was added as bassist. Since the group could not find a suitable drummer before their first appearance on March 23, 2002 at the Into the Pit Festival, Joe's brother Paul stepped in. Bryan Ferguson was in the cast as the singer. The group also covered Running Wilds Under Jolly Roger and Grim Reapers See You in Hell . By late spring, the band were still without a permanent drummer and Ferguson had left the line-up to join Scott Workmann to form Mangled Meat. Workman had also briefly been a guitarist for Hammerwhore at the time. In the summer of the same year, the band recorded the demo Devotion to Violence , which contains three songs. The next demo called Mercyless Brutality , which contains seven songs, including the three songs from the previous demo, was recorded in the fall . In April 2003, Eric Pena joined as a drummer. This was followed by other local appearances. In November the band went to Onyx Recordings to record a self-titled song. In 2004 gigs were held in the wider area and Carlos Llanas was added as the second guitarist. The demos resulted in a record deal with Witches Brew Records in the same year . The group then went to Precision Studios in Corpus Christi to record their self-titled debut album, which was released in December with a print run of 1,000. Before the release, the drummer Pena had left the band and was replaced by Rick Ortiz shortly afterwards. To promote the album followed appearances all over Texas, among others together with Toxic Holocaust , Rigor Mortis and Deceased ... At the beginning of 2007 the band split up.

In the summer of 2013 the band got together again to play concerts.

style

Madman from metal-rules.com described the band in his review of the debut album as part of the "New Wave of Thrash Metal", which wants to revive old-school thrash metal. The group sounds strongly influenced by New York bands like Overkill and Nuclear Assault and German representatives like Destruction at the time of Sentence of Death . In addition, he could hear slight crossover influences. The music is catchy, while the instruments are played more or less demanding. The vocals are rough and slightly based on Death Metal and contain screams , which would evoke memories of Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer and occasionally Tom Araya .
