Mordechai Virshubski

Mordechai Virshubski ( Hebrew מרדכי וירשובסקי; * May 10, 1930 in Leipzig ; † May 1, 2012 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli lawyer and politician who was, among other things, a member of parliament and deputy spokesman for the Knesset .

Life

Virshubski, whose family immigrated to the League of Nations mandate for Palestine during the Alija Bet in 1939 , attended Herzliya High School in Tel Aviv and then studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . After his admission to the bar, he became a legal advisor to the Water Authority in 1955 and then from 1966 to 1977 to the Tel Aviv City Council.

At the same time he began his political career in local politics in 1966 and was a member of the Tel Aviv City Council until 1977 . During this time he co-founded the Zionist , secular and liberal party Schinui in 1974 and then in 1976 the Democratic Movement of Change (Dash).

In the elections on June 13, 1977 Virshubski was elected for the first time as a member of the Knesset and was a member of this for four legislative terms until July 13, 1992. First, between June 1977 and July 1981, he was chairman of the Knesset subcommittees for fundamental rights and for questions relating to the Arab village of Arab-al-Mafjer.

In 1978 he was one of the founders of the Movement for Change and Initiative , from which in 1980 the Schinui — Center Party emerged . At times he was a member and also chairman of the secretariat of this party. During the eleventh legislature, he was chairman of the Knesset sub-committees on police and prisons and on dangers on public beaches from August 1984 to November 1988.

After leaving the Schinui in 1987, he became a member of the Ratz civil rights movement , from which the left-wing Meretz party developed in 1992 .

Most recently, Virshubski was from November 21, 1988 to July 13, 1992 Vice Spokesman of the Knesset and thus deputy to the President of Parliament Dov Shilansky .
