More (Bible)

With More ( Hebrew מוֹרֶהmôräh, 'teacher, fortune teller'), two different geographical locations are described in more detail in the Bible. It does not have to have been populated places, more likely they were cultic places.

Terebinth More

In Gen 12.6  EU a place near Shechem is mentioned where the terebinth (of) More or oak (of) More can be found. Abraham camped there when he came from Haran to Canaan . God revealed himself to him at this point and promised to give him and his descendants the land to own. Another time in Dtn 11.30  EU reference is made to the "Terebinthen More" (there in the plural).

The tree near Shechem, under which, according to Gen 35.4  EU, Jacob buried the “foreign gods” that had gathered in his household, could also be the same location. Jos 24,26  EU also speaks of a terebinth near the sanctuary in Shechem . Another mention of this place could be found in the dispute between the judge Abimelech and the people in Judge 9 : 6,37 EU , where there is talk  of a "magic oak" (verse 37). However, in these cases the reference to Terebinth More is uncertain because the name is different.

The possible translations "terebinth / oak of the teacher", "terebinth / oak of the magician" or "terebinth / oak of the fortune teller" suggest " oracle terebinths", that is to say of a cultic tree or a cultic grove on which deities were interviewed.

Hill More

Another place is the Hill More , which in Ri 7.1  EU describes the location of the military conflict between Gideon and the Midianites in more detail. Accordingly, the More hill is likely to be on the north side of the Jezreel plain , south of Mount Tabor .

W. Borée suspects a hill with an oracle sanctuary here too.
