Mori studied at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo and works as a designer , photographer , artist and model . She moved to London in 1988 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and Chelsea College of Art and Design . In 1992/1993 she participated in the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art . Mariko Mori lives and works in New York and Tokyo.

Mori mostly stages herself with unnatural contact lenses , extreme outfits, costumes and make-ups in her photographs and video works . In the early 1990s she began a series of photographs in which she satirized video games or quotes Japanese anime and mangas , stylizing herself as a cyborg figure or alien. Here she deals with the rigid traditional Japanese image of women; she caricatures it with computerized geisha figures and replaces it socially critical with her own fantasy figures .
