Moritz Brandis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moritz Brandis (* in the 15th century; † in the 16th century) was a German book printer who worked in Central Germany between 1488 and around 1504 .

Moritz, from the Delitzsch printer family Brandis - his brothers were Marcus , Lucas and Matthäus - can be verified with prints in two places.

From around 1485 he worked in the printer's workshop of his older brother Marcus in Leipzig , who had been based there since 1481 and was responsible for the first book printing documented in the trade fair city. His first book printing under his own name was Ordinarius breviarii Brandenburgensis (November 14, 1488), and he presumably continued to share the workshop with Marcus Brandis. At the beginning of July 1490, Moritz Brandis in Leipzig published an elaborate edition of the Sachsenspiegel in an edition of 386 copies with financial support from outside , which probably drove him into financial ruin after sales difficulties and led him to Magdeburg at the end of the year .

From 1491 to 1504, Moritz Brandis can be traced back to Magdeburg as a later economically extremely successful printer. Works by Vinzenz Ferrer (1493), Innocent VIII (undated), Tilemann Zierenberger (1494), Theodor Engelhausen (undated), Hieronymus Savonarola (1500) are known from this period. In addition, he also printed several liturgical works for the Magdeburg Church such as Missale Magdeburgense (1497), an Agenda (Magdeburgense) and a Breviarium Halberstadense (1500) for Halberstadt.

Several single-sheet prints without book decorations can also be assigned to Moritz Brandis, for example tax mandates from the Saxon Duke Albrecht the Beherzten (1488) and various letters of indulgence . A total of more than 100 prints by Moritz Brandis can be identified, some of which were probably created together with his brother Marcus.
