Moritz Embden

Moritz Embden (born December 27, 1790 - † March 8, 1866 ) was a German banker and merchant.

Life

Moritz Embden was the brother of Abraham Adolph Embden (1780–1855), who was the head of the Altona Jewish community from 1815 to 1820 and was listed there as a first-class Jew.

Moritz Embden lived in Hamburg and was married to Charlotte Embden (1800–1899), Heinrich Heine's sister , since 1823 . At first they lived at Neuer Wall No. 167 and from 1827 on Jungfernstieg . The couple later lived on Grosse Theaterstrasse and on the Esplanade , house number 39. The couple had four daughters and a son, their daughter Marie (1835-1908) was later the Princess della Rocca.

At first there was a friendship between Embden and Heine. Before the break occurred, Heine often lived with Embden in Hamburg.

Embden was ennobled.

The tombstone for Moritz and Charlotte Embden is on the Bornkampsweg Jewish cemetery in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld .
