Moritz Kennel drew regularly in his free time as a teenager, he was also an enthusiastic musician, he played the clarinet and saxophone. Although he developed polio at the age of 13, he was initially able to perform as a musician. In 1928 he founded the «Ländlerkapelle Moritz Kennel, Schwyz» together with his brother Hans Kennel. For the band he also contributed his own compositions such as the hiking cup march and the Am Rigi traditional costume festival .

He later founded the “mood band Lott and Kennel, Ibach-Schwyz” together with the clarinetist Hermann Lott, which between 1934 and 1936 also recorded numerous records in Lörrach , Paris and Milan - a. a. for the labels “Kristall” and “Ideal”. In 1940 he had to give up his musical career due to the consequences of polio, his freedom of movement was increasingly restricted and he was dependent on crutches.

Now he turned back to his drawing activity and completed a three-year traineeship at a Zurich graphic studio. He then quickly established himself as an illustrator and graphic artist, a job that ideally he could also do from home. His illustrations for fairy tales and children's books for various publishers became particularly well known.

In the 1940s, Kennel made contact with Papyria-Verlag and in the following years he created illustrations for fairy tale books such as Uncle Max tells , Knack und Pfiff by Martha Valance, Das Entlein Pipso by Martha Valance, Hansel & Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood , Florian and the little Brumm by Martha Valance, Hans im Glück and Snow White . In addition, pictures of card and board games were created.

Commissions from other publishers such as Orell-Füssli , Advent Verlag and the Zurich audio book association soon followed . For the books of the author Ernie Hearting (actually Ernst Herzig) he created the cover pages for his Indian novels, which were based on historical facts ( Sitting Bull , Geronimo , Metacomet ). For the Advent publishing house he made the three volumes for The Bible - Told for Children with over 80 drawings per volume.

In 1960 Moritz Kennel took over the Ringgi + Zofi series after its creator Hugo Laubi died in 1959. Over the next four years he created the comic volumes Ringgi + Zofi im Walde (1960), Ringgi + Zofi als Bildreporter (1961), Ringgi + Zofi in the Orient (1962) and Ringgi + Zofi on the Blue Nile (1963). With his collaboration with the Zurich Audiobooks Association, he again illustrated numerous fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. This collaboration lasted from 1967 to 1977.

His illustrations for several collector's picture albums such as Märchen und Sagen von Europa (1947, together with other illustrators), NPCK told (Volume 6, 1949), Schöne Schweizer Sagen (Volume 1, 1951; together with other illustrators) and Fairy Tales became popular the magic realm (1959). His most famous work today remains Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1971).
