Beat Kennel

Beat Kennel (born June 14, 1945 in Zurich ) is a Swiss illustrator and jazz musician . He has been working as a freelance illustrator and graphic artist since 1970 and headed the music organization Bazillus in Zurich until 2013.

Live and act

Kennel, who was initially self-taught as a drummer , played in the Harry Pfister Big Band in 1962. Between 1963 and 1967 he was a member of the Marcel Bernasconi Trio; He also played with Freddy Meier and Jürg Grau , with whom he also went on international guest tours. In 1967 he moved to Copenhagen for a year and a half , where he took lessons from Tootie Heath and played with musicians such as Mads Vinding , Torben Kjær, Knut-Bjørn Jensen and Torben Hertz. In 1969 he founded the music organization Bazillus with Marcel Bernasconi in Zurich and organized sensational, cross-genre concerts. He was a drummer in the Schlüntz groups with Andreas Vollenweider and at the Wiebelfetzer workshop (Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz Montreux 1973). He also played with the Ole Thilo Quintet, the Intercarlic Band (1976 Tour D, NL), at Notorisch Rhythmisches Meeting (1986) and Share the Stage (1996-2004). Since 1998 he has been composing music for projects by musicians such as Jean Paul Bourelly .

  • 2004–2013 BAZILLUS-ad hoc live club at Exhibitionstrasse 21 (closed on April 8, 2013)

Prizes and awards

Wiebelfetzer workshop (Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz Montreux 1973), in 1980 Kennel with the Bazillus colleagues Dieter Schärer, Jochen Uhl, Bernhard Uhlmann was awarded the special prize of the Art Directors Club Switzerland . In 2005 he received the Culture Prize of the City of Zurich because with the bacillus he "created a space for the local jazz scene over the years and ... thus also helped countless national musicians to break through abroad".
