Jürg Grau (* 1943 in Zurich ; † March 20, 2007 ) was a Swiss actor , urban planner and jazz musician (trumpet, guitar).

Live and act

Grau was initially interested in acting and worked as a pupil in two films by Kurt Früh : " Oberstadtgass " (1956) and " Bäckerei Zürrer " (1957). But then he decided on jazz music and learned the trumpet as an autodidact . He first played Dixieland and Swing and then switched to hard bop and influenced by Remo Rau and Irène Schweizer , with whom he played, to free jazz , but without defining a style. In the 1960s he was a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra , but appeared on the one hand with Franco Ambrosetti and George Gruntz at the Jazz Festival Montreux in 1970 and on the other hand with Irène Schweizer, Pierre Favre and Trevor Watts at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival . Since he lacked the groove in free jazz , he learned to play the guitar at this time (which he then played in addition to the trumpet). With Bruno Spoerri he founded the Frank Zappa- oriented band ZUE , which also appeared at openings by Jean Tinguely and Bernhard Luginbühl and played across the styles before the group Orgon developed from it . He also played with Christy Doran , Fredy Studer , Hans Koch , Martin Schütz , La Lupa , Matthias Ziegler, Jürg Wildberger, Urs Voerkel , Co Streiff , DJ populist and with his Grau-Bänd.

In addition to his musical activities, Grau studied architecture ; he worked full-time in the civil engineering department of Zurich, where he was most recently responsible for the design of public spaces as an urban planner. He was also involved in the “Moods” jazz club, of which he was the first president.
