Moritz Ostwalt , Kgl. Kommerzienrat (born September 5, 1822 , † January 12, 1908 ) was a German entrepreneur and committed citizen of the city of Meerane .

The merchant Moritz Ostwalt made many contributions to the industry and community of the city of Meerane . From 1846 he was a traveler in the mechanical weaving mill Thieme and Co., founded in 1843, and later co-owner of this company.

He married the daughter of his former boss and later partner Wilhelm Ludwig Hertzsch.

Ostwalt was one of the first to set up the mechanical weaving mill in Meerane . He also did an excellent job in the trade association .

Since 1859 he was a member of the city council and was re-elected from 1861 to 1863, 1877-1880 and 1881-1886. From the beginning of 1864 to the end of 1867 he was a city ​​councilor .

In 1866, Ostwalt was a deputy member of the Saxon state parliament as a representative of trade and manufacturing. He was also a commercial judge and a member of the expert association in Dresden .

He made special contributions to the city of Meerane in the field of charity . He was u. a. Head of the Volkskindergarten association and bought a plot of land for this, named after his wife Emilienstiftung . He was also an honorary member of the Association for Voluntary Poor Care .

Moritz Ostwalt founded his capital foundation of the same name "Ostwalt-Stiftung" in 1877 with 4,054.44 marks. The interest was to be used to serve food to poor Meerans.

In 1908, by a will , he left the city with a capital of 117,482 marks for beautifying and charitable purposes, 500 marks for the hostel for homeland and 1,000 marks for the association for voluntary poor relief .

Because of his many services to the city of Meerane, Moritz Ostwalt was awarded the title of Kommerzienrat in 1880 .

A street in Meerane bears his name in his honor.
