Moritz Rothert
Johann Moritz Heinrich Rothert (born December 21, 1802 in Friedrichsdorf ; † May 31, 1886 in Hanover ) was a German classical philologist , teacher and headmaster .
Life
Moritz Rothert was born the son of a preacher and graduated from the Latina in Halle in 1821 . He then studied theology in Halle and later moved to Tübingen , where he completed his studies in 1824. During his studies in 1821 he became a member of the Old Halleschen Burschenschaft Palatina ; he joined the fraternity reading club and the Quellengesellschaft and in 1823 the old Tübingen fraternity Germania . In 1822 he was a deputy for the Hallesche Burschenschaft at the Boys' Day in Bensheim and Zwingenberg on Bergstrasse in the Odenwald. Due to his fraternity activities, an investigation was initiated against him at the instigation of the Prussian Ministry of the Interior, as a result of which he was sentenced in 1824 to three months' arrest , which he served in the fortress of Minden until the end of March 1825 .
In 1825 he taught as a teacher at the Herford grammar school, in 1829 he was appointed senior teacher at the Minden grammar school. In 1832 he moved to the Georgianum grammar school in Lingen, where he was first rector and from 1834 director. In 1845 he was appointed director of the Aurich grammar school. In 1863 he retired for health reasons and moved to Hanover.
Rothert was a pioneer of the “Gesamtgymnasium” or “Einheitsgymnasium” as a teaching institution combined from the traditional grammar school and the community school. In addition, he advocated “German as a central subject in high schools”. German should not just be one subject alongside the others, but should enjoy an express value as “the whole”, that is, as a medium for conveying the contents of all other subjects.
His son was the theologian Wilhelm Rothert .
