The Moto Guzzi P series is a series of motorcycles from the Italian manufacturer Moto Guzzi . It was built from 1932 to 1940.

history

While Moto Guzzi only dealt with half-liter motorcycles in the first eleven years of its existence, a smaller motorcycle, the P 175 , came onto the market for the first time in 1932 . Machines of this class were popular because of their various legislative advantages over larger motorcycles.

In 1934 these advantages disappeared and Moto Guzzi added the more powerful P 250 model to the P 175 . In the same year there was also a PE 250 in which the rear wheel was no longer rigid, but guided in a spring-loaded swing arm.

In 1938 a sports model of the PE 250 with the designation PES appeared with a lighter frame and an optimized engine.

The PES was taken out of the program as early as 1939. The PL (normal version) and PLS (sport version) models were released for this purpose . They were made cheaper and simpler. The engine capacity was increased from 238 cm³ to 247 cm³, but the performance remained the same. For example, these quarter-liter machines no longer had rear suspension and were painted uniformly black. The role of the luxury version was taken over by the Egretta .

The Ardetta was also released in 1939 . It also had the new engine, but no longer with magnetic but with battery ignition. Without rear suspension and in gray paint with white lines, it took on the role of the “people's motorcycle”.

In 1940 the P-series was discontinued due to the war . After the war, the Airone , which had already appeared in 1939, took over the role of the PE 250 and the Egretta; the rigid frame models found no successors.

technology

Engine and drive

The P-series has an air-cooled single - cylinder four-stroke engine with a horizontal cylinder. On the left stump of the double-bearing crankshaft there is a smooth flywheel that runs outside the housing. Behind it, a spur gear drives the basket of the multi-plate oil bath clutch mounted on the transmission input shaft. The three-speed helical gearbox can be operated with a shift lever on the right side of the tank. With the Ardetta, there was also a foot switch with a rocker switch on the right side of the engine. The transmission is connected to the rear wheel by a machine chain.

The two hanging valves are controlled by the camshaft below via push rods and rocker arms . To switch off the engine, the bumpers are pushed forward using a valve lifter so that both valves open. The magneto is driven by a spur gear on the right side of the engine. The ignition timing must be adjusted manually. The Ardetta has a battery ignition .

For mixture preparation, the engine has a flat-flow carburetor with a round slide, 18 mm passage, and without an air filter. The chrome-plated exhaust pipe is pulled back on the right side of the machine and ends in a cigar-shaped silencer (Egretta and Ardetta: cigar-shaped with a dovetail).

Frame and chassis

The P-series has a double-loop pipe / sheet metal frame. While the rear wheel of the P 175, P 250, PL, PLS and Ardetta models is rigidly suspended, the frames of the PE 250, the PES and the Egretta have a tail boom and a rear swing arm with cantilever suspension , the friction dampers of which are supported on the tail boom. The front wheel sits in a parallelogram fork with a barrel spring .

Tanks

The fuel tank holds 10 liters, the oil tank below 2 liters. The oil tank is connected to the cylinder head and the oil pump in the engine's dry sump by chrome-plated copper pipes.

Wheels and brakes

The 19 ″ wheels are wire spoke wheels with half-hub drum brakes . The rear brake is operated via a foot lever on the left side of the engine and a linkage, the front with a cable from the handlebars. The foot brake lever can be operated with the heel.

Materials

The engine / gearbox housing is made of aluminum, the cylinder and cylinder head are made of gray cast iron . The frame, the rear swing arm, the front fork, the tank and the mudguards, on the other hand, are made of sheet steel.

Painting, surface treatment and emblems

The sheet steel parts are painted in dark red or black and lined in gold. The tanks - with the exception of those of the PL, the PLS and the Ardetta - are chrome-plated and partially painted. All sheet steel parts of the Ardetta are painted gray and lined with white. On the tank sides of the machines there are gold-colored Moto Guzzi emblems as decals. The gray cast iron parts of the engine are burnished .
