The Moto Guzzi Airone is a motorcycle that the Italian company Moto Guzzi manufactured from 1939 to 1957. "Airone" means "heron" in German.

history

In 1939 the Airone was presented as a variant and the Guzzi PE 250 engine , which was discontinued a year later , still with a tubular frame.

As early as 1940 the Airone received a new frame made of pressed sheet metal parts and rear suspension. In 1947 the front suspension was brought up to the state of the art with a telescopic fork. From the end of 1948, the cylinder and cylinder head were made of light metal and, in addition to the touring model, there was a more highly compressed sports model. In 1952, touring and sports models received a new, larger tank in red / black paintwork and a magneto with automatic adjustment of the ignition point. From 1954, the sports model's tank was partially chrome-plated and the engine power was slightly reduced. In the last version from 1956, both models received exhaust ends with smooth pipes.

While the selling price for the Airone was ITL 6200 in 1939 , it soared to ITL 370,000 (€ 191.09) in 1949. In 1956 the Airone Turismo ITL cost 349,000 (€ 180.24) and the Airone Sport ITL 364,000 (€ 187.99).

In 1957 the production of the Airone was discontinued without replacement because it proved to be no longer competitive with more modern designs.

technology

Engine and drive

The Airone has an air-cooled single - cylinder four-stroke engine with a horizontal cylinder. On the left stump of the double-bearing crankshaft there is a smooth flywheel that runs outside the housing. A spur gear attached behind it drives the basket of the multi-plate oil bath clutch mounted on the transmission input shaft. The helical four-speed gearbox can be operated with a rocker switch on the right-hand side of the engine; the first gear (in contrast to the Falcone) is at the bottom. The rocker switch is connected to the gearbox preselector by a coupling rod. The rear wheel is driven by the transmission through a roller chain.

The two hanging valves are controlled by the camshaft below via bumpers and rocker arms . To switch off the engine, the bumpers are pushed forward using a valve lifter so that both valves open. The magneto is driven by a spur gear on the right side of the engine. The ignition timing was adjusted by hand; it was not until the end of 1952 that there was an automatic ignition adjustment - parallel to the Falcone.

The mixture preparation of the touring model is accomplished by a flat-flow carburetor with a round slide, 22 mm passage and without an air filter. In the sports model the carburettor has a 25 mm passage. The chrome-plated exhaust pipe is pulled back on the right side of the machine and has a cigar-shaped silencer. In the machines manufactured up to 1955 this ends in a dovetail, in later models in a smooth tube.

Frame and chassis

In its first year, the Airone had a double-loop tubular frame with a tail boom. From 1940 there was a new frame made from pressed sheet metal parts. The rear swing arm that was introduced at the same time has a cantilever suspension with friction dampers supported on the tail boom. In the models manufactured up to 1946, the front wheel sits in a parallelogram fork with a barrel spring . Later models have an upside-down fork .

Tanks

The fuel tank has a volume of 10.5 liters, the oil tank underneath has a volume of 2.5 liters. The oil tank is connected to the cylinder head and the oil pump in the engine's dry sump by chrome-plated copper pipes. In 1952 the Airone received a larger, more modern shaped gasoline tank.

Wheels and brakes

The 19 ″ wheels are wire-spoke wheels and have half-hub drum brakes . The rear brake is operated via a foot lever on the left side of the engine and a linkage, the front with a cable from the handlebars. The foot brake lever can be operated with the heel.

Materials

The engine / gearbox housing, the cylinder and the cylinder head are made of aluminum. The frame, the front fork, the tank, the mudguards and the rear swing arm are made of sheet steel.

Painting, surface treatment and emblems

With the exception of the aluminum parts, all civil Astore models are painted in fire red (similar to RAL 3000). Until 1952, the petrol and oil tanks were chrome-plated and partially painted. The fuel tank has rubber knee cushions on the sides. The larger petrol tank from 1952 is painted red; instead of the previous knee cushions, there are fields painted black on the sides of the tank. From 1954, the sports model again had a chrome-plated, partially painted tank, with the previously black fields shining in chrome. All models have gold-colored and black lines on the tank, mudguards and tool boxes.

On the tank sides of the machines there are gold-colored Moto Guzzi emblems as decals.
