The Moulage Museum of the University of Zurich has one of the world's largest collection of plaster casts . It was created between 1918 and 1948. The collection is a cultural asset of national importance .
history
Bruno Bloch , the first professor of dermatology and venereology at the University of Zurich, founded the collection of moulages, realistic three-dimensional impressions of clinical pictures. From 1918 Lotte Volger (1883–1956), who had learned to cook with Fritz Kolbow , produced the teaching aids that were important at the time. As a specialty under Paul Clairmont in the years 1919 to 1927 moulages of surgical diseases were modulated, around 500 by Adolf Fleischmann . Bloch's successors, Guido Miescher and Hans Storck , expanded the collection further. Moulageurs from Zurich therefore traveled to India several times to record cases of leprosy and other tropical skin diseases.
From the 1960s onwards, the increasingly better quality of color slides pushed the moulages out of the classroom. Among other things, today's collection owes its existence to the Moulageuse Elsbeth Stoiber, who in 1972 did not carry out the order to melt the moulages. After the collection was threatened with extinction again and again until the late 1980s, it has experienced an upswing since the beginning of the restoration work in 1990, especially since it was able to move into permanent premises in the new building on Haldenbachstrasse. Surgical moulages are only available in Paris and Zurich today.

The moulage collection includes over 1800, mostly locally produced moulages. Around 600 of them are on display in the museum.
In addition to dermatological clinical pictures, surgical cases as well as self and animal experiments were presented in the 1929s.
For several years now, the moulage collection has again served as a teaching collection for students at the University of Zurich.
