Mount Edred is a striking, 2,195 m high mountain that rises 16 km inland from George VI Sound at the southern end of the Douglas Range on the east coast of the Antarctic Alexander I Island .
The American polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth took the first aerial photographs of this mountain during an overflight on November 23, 1935. These were used by his compatriot WLG Joerg for an initial mapping. The east side was superficially surveyed in 1936 during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . A more precise survey was carried out in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey , which named the mountain after the English King Edred (≈924–955). The west side was mapped by the British geographer Derek Searle in 1960 based on aerial photographs of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) under the direction of the US polar explorer Finn Ronne .
