Mount Gilbert is a 1,420 m high mountain in the southwest of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It rises from the watershed between the Airy Glacier and the Seller Glacier at a distance of 8 km northwest of Mount Castro .
Aerial photographs of the mountain were taken in February 1937 during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) and in November 1947 during the US Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948). The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out a survey in December 1958. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the mountain in 1962 after the English doctor and physicist William Gilbert (1540-1603), whose work provided the basis for understanding the earth's magnetic field and the declination of compasses .
