The Mount Index is a mountain in the central part of the Cascade Range in the State of Washington . It is just south of the Skykomish River and US Highway 2 on the western limit of the Cascades. Notwithstanding its relatively small height, it is a famous and dramatic appearance as the summit consists of three peaks rising steeply from a very low base. The main summit is the southernmost of the three, while the northern summit rises even steeper from the valley. The elevation gain here is more than 4,250 ft (1,295 m) at less than 1 mi (1.6 km) distance.

The first recorded ascent of Mount Index's main peak was on October 29, 1911 by HB Hinman, Ernest Martin, Lee Pickett, and George E. Wright. However, they found a flagpole on the summit, so it was definitely not a proper first ascent. Since the easiest ascent route can be mastered without technical aids, a much earlier ascent by Indians is likely. The first ascent of the steeper and more difficult north summit was carried out in 1929 by Lionel Chute and Victor Kaartinen via the north face route.

The standard route to the main summit is climbing the east side of the mountain from Lake Serene. The standard route to the north summit is the north face route, which requires long-term, technically moderately demanding climbing ( difficulty level III, class 5.6).

Mount Index was once called West Index Mountain. Instead, Mount Baring was named Mount Index. They were both renamed in 1917.
