Mount Baring , or Baring Mountain , is a mountain in the Cascade Range in Washington state . It is located about three kilometers northeast of the Skykomish River , which flows into the Puget Sound at Everett . The Mount Baring area is part of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forests .

Like the nearby Mount Index , Mount Baring is a very distinctive mountain due to its steep slopes. The Skykomish River flows at a height of only about 232 meters above sea level and thus well below the mountain. Less than a kilometer northeast of the summit, Barclay Lake is at an altitude of 1,128 meters. This means that Mount Baring has a notch height of around 740 meters.

The first recorded ascent was performed on July 28, 1897 by John Charlton and Albert H. Sylvester. It is likely that Native Americans took one of the easier routes to the summit long before the first ascent was known. The normal route leads over the northwest ridge. It runs off the beaten track, partly through trees, and requires more climbing near the peaks. Some of the climbing routes on the northeast side of the summit area are extraordinarily long and in places reach grade V of difficulty.
