Mount Murchison is a very distinctive and 3500 m high mountain in East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Mountaineer Range it rises as the highest point of the rugged watershed between the Fitzgerald and Wylde glaciers .
The British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered him in January 1841 during his Antarctic expedition (1839-1843). He named the mountain after the geologist Roderick Murchison (1792–1871), Secretary General of the British Association .
