Scientists of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941) photographed him during an overflight in December 1940. Additional aerial photographs were taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948), which mapped him with the help of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey . The expedition leader Finn Ronne named the mountain after Arthur Earl Owen (1927-2000), a participant in his research trip.
