The Mourneview Park is a stadium in Lurgan , Northern Ireland . It is the home of Glenavon FC in the NIFL Premiership .

history

1895-1950

The stadium was inaugurated in September 1895 with a game between the home team Glenavon FC and the Linfield Swifts . Back then it was nothing more than a lawn . Around 1900 a six-row seating grandstand was created from wood. It was about as long as 1/3 the length of the field . Later, wings were built to the left and right of the middle section , so that the grandstand now covered one side of the lawn and had around 600 seats. In 1924 the property was bought by Glenavon FC. Greyhound races were also held at the stadium in the 1930s and early 1940s .

1950-1990

A small expansion was carried out during the 1950/51 season. It was z. B. built a wall that surrounded and still surrounds the field (a fence was added in 1977). The first standing room was made possible in 1954. These were heaped grass hills on all free sides. In the course of the 1960s, these were expanded to form standing room stands and were expanded again and again until 1992. In 1987, as in all other Irish stadiums, floodlights were installed.

1990 - today

The current main grandstand dates back to 1993 and seats 1247 spectators in 10 rows. In 2001 , seating was made possible in the home grandstand, the Glenavon Crescent End . But at the request of some fans, a few standing places were left untouched. In 2002 a new floodlight system was installed which is considered by not a few to be the best in Ireland .

Others

Seamus Heaney writes in one of his poems:

Color; or the vision of Mourneview

In German : color; or the dream image of Mourneview
He refers to the sight of the stadium from a vantage point. From there you can see how the yellow stairs, the blue seats and the gray concrete create an impressive picture.
