Mpimbwe is a district of the Katavi region . The district is bordered by the Tabora region to the north, the Mbeya region to the east, the Rukwa region to the south, the Mpanda district to the west and the Nsimbo district to the northwest .

geography

The district has a size of 7705 square kilometers and around 100,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The land lies between 1000 and 1250 meters above sea level and is part of the dry highlands in the east of the Katavi region. There is a dry season from mid-May to mid-November and a rainy season with less than 1000 millimeters of precipitation. The temperature is between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius, the hottest time is from August to January.

The district was created in 2017 by dividing the Mlele district.

The largest ethnic group in the district are the Sukuma (60 percent), and Wapimbwe and Wafipa also live in Mpimbwe.

Facilities and services

  • Education: 29 primary schools and four secondary schools are available for the education of young people (as of 2019). In 2014 there were 40 pupils for one teacher in primary school.
  • Health: There are fourteen health centers in the district (as of 2019).
  • Water: In 2012, 42 percent of the population had access to clean and safe water.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Around 95 percent of the population live from agriculture. In small farms, manioc, rice and maize are mainly grown for their own use. Peanuts, rice, and corn are also sold. In addition to arable farming, many farmers keep pets, especially cattle and poultry, but also goats and sheep.
  • Roads: The district has 200 kilometers of district roads and 500 kilometers of community roads. About two fifths of the streets are drivable all year round (as of 2017).

Katavi National Park : Mpimbwe is part of the Katavi National Park, which has a high density of large mammals at the few water points, especially in the dry season.
