Mr. Bungle is the debut album by the US jazz core band Mr. Bungle . It was released on August 13, 1991.

history

Already in 1986 the band had released the demo recording The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny , stylistically still very much metal . After several line-up changes with subsequent style changes - including Ska and Swing influences were included in the music - she finally released the first regular studio album Mr. Bungle in 1991 on Warner Bros. Records . Some of the songs on this album were already known since the last demo tape OU818 , which was released two years earlier .

Style and reception

On Mr. Bungle , as on later releases, especially Disco Volante , you can hear a variety of style influences. Quiet passages, accompanied by keyboards , change abruptly with funk , dub and metal scenes, which are accompanied by singer Mike Patton's wide vocal spectrum. In between there are some audio sequences such as film clips.

The music on this album is compared to the early Red Hot Chili Peppers , among other things , but above all it is often described as "exhausting". For example, "Leperous" writes on metal-archives.com:

“This album is what I would call 'gentle insanity'. It follows little structure, and the only sane person seems to be the drummer. [...] This album is very insane, but it presents itself in an organized and thoughtful manner. "

“This album is what I would call“ friendly madness ”. It hardly follows any structure, and the only sane person seems to be the drummer. […] This album is very insane, but it is presented in an organized and well thought-out way. "

Despite this rating, the album received mostly positive reviews; Allmusic, for example, awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars.

August 3, 2003, accessed on July 25, 2010 : “Sometimes“ Mr.Bungle ”sound like the funky version of“ Madness ”, including moaning saxophones, sometimes like the never-existing heavy backing band Frank Zappas while the master is taking a pee break , then again like the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" always wanted to sound in the past, funky without end, or, as far as the power and the guitar sound are concerned, like "Extreme" on better days.
