Muhammad Heikal

Muhammad Hassanein Heikal ( Arabic محمد حسنين هيكل, DMG Muḥammad Ḥasanain Haikal ; * September 23, 1923 ; † February 17, 2016 ) was an Egyptian journalist . For many years he was editor -in- chief of the oldest Egyptian daily newspaper al-Ahram .

Life

Heikal worked as a ghostwriter for the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and represented the ideology of pan-Arabism . From 1957 to 1974 he was editor-in-chief of the government newspaper Al-Ahram , and he was also a member of the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union . With the rise of Anwar as-Sadat to the presidency of Egypt, Heikal fell out of favor.

Heikal has published numerous books on the history of his country and political topics. He also appeared on several shows on the Qatari television channel Al Jazeera .

In an interview with Robert Fisk in 2007, he accused the incumbent Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak of being unrealistic.
