Muhammad VII (Granada)

Muhammad VII , in full nameمحمد السابع المستعين بن يوسف الثاني / Muḥammad as-sābiʿ al-Mustaʿīn b. Yūsuf aṯ-ṯānī (* 1370 ; † 1408 ), was Emir of Granada from 1392 to 1408.

Muhammad VII came to power in 1392 as the son of the deposed Yusuf II (1391-1392). Under him, Granada's relations with Castile began to deteriorate considerably , and the armistice that had existed since 1344/1350 was ended. First, an incursion by Castilian knights of the Alcantara order was repulsed by the Nasrids (1394). After the armistice of 1344 expired, Muhammad VII began in 1405 with incursions into the Castilian border areas. This led to a counter-attack and the closure of the Strait of Gibraltar by Castile. Although Muhammad VII was able to advance as far as Jaén again , he died in May 1408.

His brother and successor Yusuf III. (1408–1417) - whom Muhammad had imprisoned on his accession to the throne in Salobreña to prevent disputes over the throne - a new armistice was soon concluded, but the emirate came under increasing pressure from Castile due to the war campaigns that flared up again and again which should ultimately lead to the fall of the empire in 1492.
