Yusuf III.

Yusuf III. , with full name Abū l-Hajjādsch Yūsuf ath-thālith an-Nāsir ibn Yūsuf ath-thānī  /أبو الحجاج يوسف الثالث الناصر بن يوسف الثاني / Abū l-Ḥaǧǧāǧ Yūsuf aṯ-ṯāliṯ an-Nāṣir b. Yūsuf aṯ-ṯānī (* 1376 ; † November 9, 1417 in Granada ), was Emir of Granada from 1408 to 1417.

His brother Emir Muhammad VII (1370-1408) had Yusuf incarcerated in the castle of Salobreña when he ascended the throne in 1392 to prevent disputes over the throne. After Muhammad's death in 1408, Yusuf III. to succeed him. At first he tried to end the war with Castile . In the year he took office, he managed to conclude an armistice .

However, the danger to the Nasrid Empire could not be eliminated as a result, as an alliance of the Christian empires of the Iberian Peninsula against Granada was formed as early as 1410. With the use of artillery , Antequera, one of the most important fortresses in the empire, was conquered. This had secured the way to Granada. The loss of this fortress favored further incursions of Castile in the following years, the destruction and devastation of which the economy of the empire was considerably weakened in the following decades.

Yusuf was not only considered a capable (if hapless) statesman, he was also a subtle poet. During his reign, the Alhambra was expanded to include the northernmost parts of the Nasrid Palaces.

He was succeeded on the throne of Granada by his son Muhammad VIII (1417-1419).
