Muiderkring

The Muiderkring ( ndl. [ ˈMœy̑dəɾˌkɾɪŋ ] "Muiderkreis") was a Dutch community of the first half of the 17th century around the poet and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft . The circle was named after the castle of Muiden in the province of North Holland .

Since 1621, scholars and writers have met every summer to discuss literature - mainly poetry and drama - and music and to cultivate the arts. Among the participants were u. a. the writers Caspar van Baerle , Gerhard Johannes Vossius , Joost van den Vondel and Constantijn Huygens as well as the singer Francisca Duarte and the graphic artist and cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu . Her aesthetic theoretical work had a decisive influence on Dutch literature , which developed from the Renaissance tradition of the Rederijkers to a heyday in the Golden Age .
