biography

Sangma was born in a small village near the town of "Ampati" on what was then the western border of the Indian state of Assam. From 1972 the district belonged to the newly formed state of Meghalaya. His parents were Binoy Bhushan M. Marak and Roshanara M. Sangma. He belongs to the mountain people of the Garo . After attending Government High School in Ampati and St. Anthony's College in Shillong from 1982 to 1984, he studied medicine from 1984 to 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) degree from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal .

From January 1990 to May 1991 he worked as a doctor in a private clinic in Tura . In May 1991 he switched to the civil service and worked as a medical and health advisor in the infirmary in Zikzak (West Garo Hills). In January 1993, Sangma gave up the medical profession and ran as an independent candidate in the Meghalaya parliament elections. He was elected to the 58-Ampatigiri constituency in February 1993 . A short time later he joined the Congress Party . In the following elections to the state parliament in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 he was able to maintain the constituency. In the all - India parliamentary election in 2004 , he ran in the Lok Sabha constituency 2-Tura , but was defeated by his opponent Purno Agitok Sangma ( AITC ). Also in 2006 he was unsuccessful in the by-election in this constituency. From 1993 he held various positions in the government of Meghalaya. From April 11, 2005 to October 6, 2005, as well as from March 11, 2007 to March 2008 and from May 2009 to April 2010, he was Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

In March 2010 the Congress Party government of Meghalaya under Chief Minister DD Lapang got into a crisis. A group of Congress Party MPs called on the Chief Minister to reshuffle his cabinet. When the latter did not comply, the dissidents finally pushed for his removal. Lapang resigned on April 18, 2010, and two days later, on April 20, 2010 (his 45th birthday), Mukul Sangma was elected as the new Chief Minister. In the 2013 general election in Meghalaya, the Congress Party under his leadership won 29 out of 60 constituencies and Sangma was sworn in again as Chief Minister on March 5, 2013.

In 2016, Mukul Sangma also came under fire within the party. He was accused of an inefficient or authoritarian style of government, and rumors surfaced that he was transferring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), or that the BJP wanted to poach dissatisfied congressmen or that the leadership of the congress party Sangma was planning to replace him. Sangma responded, among other things, by declaring that he was not Chief Minister for an end in himself, but that he would vacate his post if the Congress party finds a better candidate.

Politically, Sangma has declared youth work in the fields of sport and culture to be one of his government's priorities.

In addition to his native Garo , he is said to speak five other languages, including fluent Meitei (Manipuri). He is married and is considered an outspoken football fan .
