Tura is a city in the Indian state of Meghalaya . It is the second largest city in Meghalaya by population.
The city is the capital of the West Garo Hills district . Tura has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 11 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 74,858 inhabitants, of whom 37,236 were men and 37,622 women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 72%. Hindus form a minority of around 25%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 91.3%, well above the national average. 71.8% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes . The majority of the population belongs to the Garo .
Meghalaya's capital, Shillong, is 323 kilometers away and can be reached by bus or shuttle helicopter. The border with Bangladesh is 50 kilometers away.
