history

Michelwitz was mentioned in 1324 as "Michilquuiz" and around 1378 as "Michelwicz". At that time the place was in the area of the County of Groitzsch (castrum Groitzsch), which was combined with the Pegau escort office to form the Pegau office in 1460 . From then until 1856, Michelwitz was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Pegau. The jurisdiction over Michelwitz lay with the Löbnitz manor . From 1856 the place belonged to the judicial office of Pegau and from 1875 to the district administration Borna .

On October 1, 1948, the neighboring towns of Pautzsch , Maltitz and Zschagast were incorporated into Michelwitz. In 1952 the municipality of Michelwitz with its three districts came to the Borna district in the Leipzig district . The incorporation of Michelwitz to Auligk took place on July 1, 1973. The Zschagast district east of Michelwitz had to give way in 1981 to the Groitzscher Dreieck opencast mine (1974-1991).

As a district of Auligk, Michelwitz was assigned to the Saxon district of Borna in 1990 and to the district of Leipziger Land in 1994 . When Auligk was incorporated into Groitzsch on January 1, 1996, Michelwitz became a part of the city of Groitzsch.
