The cul-de-sac village of Cöllnitz was first mentioned in 1378 as "Kolnz". The current name has been documented since 1661. The Slavic place name has the meaning "place of Kolin", i. H. Place of the wheel maker, Wagner.

Cöllnitz was around 1378 in the area of the County of Groitzsch , which was combined with the Pegau escort office to form the Pegau office in 1460 . Since then, the place was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office Pegau until 1856 . Until 1530 Cöllnitz was in the feudal possession of the Pflugk family , after that the jurisdiction was around 1551 with the manor Löbnitz , around 1606 and 1764 with the manor Mausitz . From 1856 the place belonged to the judicial office of Pegau and from 1875 to the district administration Borna .

On October 1, 1948, Cöllnitz was incorporated into Großstolpen , with which the place was assigned to the Borna district in the Leipzig district in 1952, to the Borna district of Saxony in 1990 and to the Leipziger Land district in 1994 .
