Altengroitzsch is a district of the city of Groitzsch in the district of Leipzig (Free State of Saxony ). The place was incorporated into the city of Groitzsch in 1948.

Altengroitzsch is located in the Leipzig lowland bay three kilometers southwest of Groitzsch. The Schwennigke flows directly to the west of the village, while the White Elster runs parallel to the river to the west .

On the steep edge of the Elsteraue near Altengroitzsch there was a Slavic-early German rampart. From the village shape, the place is a Slavic Rundling . The place name of Altengroitzsch is traced back to a connection with the development of the nearby Groitzsch Castle under Count Wiprecht von Groitzsch (1050–1124).

Altengroitzsch was around 1378 in the area of ​​the County of Groitzsch , which in 1460 was combined with the Pegau escort office to form the Pegau office . Since then, the place was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office Pegau until 1856 . The jurisdiction over Altengroitzsch lay with the Löbnitz manor . From 1856 the place belonged to the judicial office of Pegau and from 1875 to the district administration Borna .

Altengroitzsch is located in the central German lignite district . Between 1851 and 1863 was in the "Berthagrube" at the southern outskirts of lignite in civil engineering dismantled. In 1884 the “Altengroitzscher Coal Company” with 79 workers and five civil servants owned the mine.
