The Schwennigke (also Schwenke ) is a natural left-hand tributary of the Schnauder . It rises in the Gleinaer Grund near Gleina and runs from Tröglitz on a distance of about 25 km through the Elsteraue parallel to the White Elster before it flows into the Schnauder at Audigast . This in turn joins the Weisse Elster a few hundred meters later.

Surname

The name is derived from the Slavic Swinica ( Eng . "Schweinbach").

Historical use

From 1888, the Schwennigke's water was made available to the surrounding communities as drinking water via a specially constructed pipe. As a result of lignite mining , the groundwater level in the region sank increasingly from 1908, so the Schwennigke ran less water every year. In order to stabilize the supply, a waterworks was put into operation from 1932, which collected water from seven spring and collection shafts in an elevated tank. This system was discontinued in 2000 by MIDEWA Zeitz, the systems and elevated tanks were demolished. As a result, the protection water zone was revoked from the source area .
