geography

Gatzen is located in the Leipzig lowland bay five kilometers southwest of Groitzsch. The Schwennigke flows directly to the west of the village, while the White Elster and the state border with Saxony-Anhalt run parallel to the river to the west . Neighboring towns are the districts of Saasdorf in the north and Löbnitz-Bennewitz in the south , which also belong to Groitzsch .

history

In 1090 Gatzen was mentioned as "pagus Gutsin" or "Gautsin". The name of the place, which probably goes back to a Slavic foundation, means "village". Originally, Gatzen was a cul-de-sac-like Rundling from the local area . Gatzen was around 1378 in the area of the County of Groitzsch (castrum Groitzsch), which in 1460 was united with the Pegau escort office to form the Pegau office . Since then, the place was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office Pegau until 1856 . The jurisdiction over Gatzen lay with the Löbnitz manor . From 1856 the place belonged to the judicial office of Pegau and from 1875 to the district administration Borna .

On September 1, 1948, it was incorporated into Auligk , with which the place came to the Borna district in the Leipzig district in 1952, to the Borna district of Saxony in 1990 and to the Leipziger Land district in 1994 . When Auligk was incorporated into Groitzsch on January 1, 1996, Gatzen became a part of the town of Groitzsch.

Gatzen Church

After the 12th century Romanesque church was destroyed in 1638 during the Thirty Years' War , the Gatzener church was rebuilt as early as 1639. In the course of the expansion of the late Gothic building, it was designed in the Baroque style in 1698/99 . The organ of the church comes from the hand of Urban Kreutzbach and was consecrated in 1850. The church has boxes belonging to the patron saints residing in neighboring Löbnitz. The Senfft von Pilsach family , who owned the Löbnitz manor with their villages between 1693 and the 18th century, had their hereditary burial site in the church of Gatzen.
