The World Grand Prix is a major tournament in darts and was organized for the 19th time in 2016 from October 2nd to 8th by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The venue for the 16th time was the Citywest Hotel in Dublin .

The defending champion Robert Thornton was replaced by the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen , who won the tournament for the third time with a 5: 2 sets final victory against Gary Anderson .

format

The tournament was played in the knockout system in sets , which in turn were divided into a best of five legs mode. The number of sets to be won increased per round. Game mode in the 1st round was a best of 3 sets . By the finale, the mode rose to best of 9 sets . Each leg was played in 501 double-in-double-out mode.

Prize money

As in the previous year, a total of £ 400,000 in prize money was distributed. The prize money was distributed among the participants as follows:

The following players were eligible to participate in the World Grand Prix 2016 (deadline: 23 September, after the 16th Players Championship Event ):

  • The first 16 players of the Order of Merit , of which the first 8 will be seeded
  • The 14 first-placed players in the ProTour Order of Merit who are not already eligible to participate via the Order of Merit
  • The 2 best-placed players in the ProTour Order of Merit from Ireland and Northern Ireland who do not meet either of the above two criteria and have participated in at least four Players Championships tournaments

The broadcasters Sport1 and Sport1 + broadcast the event in German-speaking countries . The stations can also be received in Austria via cable and satellite.
