The Mulberry Plantation is a Grade II listed mansion in Berkeley County , South Carolina .
history
The property was built in 1714 at the earliest and 1725 at the latest by Thomas Broughton, later governor of the Province of South Carolina , over a fortification from the Yamasee War . During the American Revolutionary War , a cavalry unit from the Kingdom of Great Britain occupied the Mulberry Plantation and used it as their headquarters.
On October 9, 1960, the Mulberry Plantation was recognized as a National Historic Landmark . On October 15, 1966, it was included as a monument in the National Register of Historic Places .
architecture
The two-storey Mulberry Plantation has an attached pavilion in each corner and a staircase on the central axis, which approximates the symmetry of Georgian architecture . The lobby is very large, making the rest of the building smaller. The rooms on the ground floor were rebuilt around 1800 in Adam style, while the original woodwork in the bedrooms on the floor above has been preserved. The design of the Mulberry Plantation features architectural elements of different architectural styles , including the roof cornice in the Flemish style, the corner pavilions, which refer to Huguenot influence, and Georgian consoles . The gable triangle above the south porch shows a mulberry sapling framed by a horseshoe and probably symbolizes the hope of being able to build a silk industry in South Carolina at the beginning of the 18th century . The year 1714 engraved in the weather vanes above the corner pavilions gives the only indication of the exact date of construction of the manor house.
