Its purpose is to inform the visitors of the national park about the life in the Wadden Sea in the different areas. In addition, the aquariums of the Wattforum - 11 large and 17 special aquariums with a total volume of 150 m³ - serve as a rearing point for endangered creatures. Seahorses of the genus Hippocampus guttulatus caught in the Wadden Sea , which were actually considered to be extinct in the North Sea, were bred in summer 2004. The reproduction of cat sharks has also already been successful.

Operation and development

The Multimar Wattforum is operated by NationalparkService gGmbH , the management company of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. It was completed in 1999 after two years of construction and an investment of ten million euros . In 2003 the building was supplemented by an extension with a permanent whale exhibition; the central exhibit is the replica of a 17.5 meter long sperm whale that stranded off Denmark in 1997 . The whale house cost a further 2.37 million euros.

On November 24, 2008, the third expansion of the facility was opened by the then Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Peter Harry Carstensen . This construction phase expanded the exhibition area by 825 square meters to 3,125 square meters and the aquarium system by 300,000 liters to now over 500,000 liters of water. One of the main attractions is a basin with a capacity of around 250,000 liters with a six-meter by six-meter panoramic window.

Visit numbers

Since it opened, around 200,000 visitors have visited the exhibition every year. In 2003, the best result to date was achieved with 240,000 visitors. At its 15th anniversary in 2014, a total of 2.7 million visitors were reported.

As an external project, the Wattforum was part of Expo 2000 .

Further information centers with exhibitions on the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea can be found in Büsum , Wyk auf Föhr , Meldorf and Nordstrand , among others .
