Cuernavaca is a municipality in the Mexican state of Morelos . The seat of the municipality and its largest town is the eponymous Cuernavaca , which is also the capital of the state. The municipality had 365,168 inhabitants at the 2010 census, the area amounts to 200.3 km².

The municipality Cuernavaca is located in the northwest of the state at an altitude of 1100  m to 3000  m , about half in the physiographic provinces of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal and the Sierra Madre del Sur . It borders the Municipios Huitzilac , Tepoztlán , Jiutepec , Emiliano Zapata , Temixco and Miacatlán, as well as the state of México .

About 38% of the community area is urbanized, each about 20% of the area is pasture land, forests or areas for arable farming.
